Don't jump off cliffs!

So Little Wren Sunflower Boy is in a hospital tonight,* he jumped off a cliff and perforated his eardrum. He's now sporting a very flash turban and gets jelly and ice cream for dinner. It's a good way to learn that sometimes the choices you make in life have consequences. I mean just look at this dinner!  We had a chuckle and said the one thing he should hav e done was put Pizza Hut down as his emergency contact number!  Still, at least he's had his dinner, unlike me. I'm just sitting here watching his drip, drip and doing my very best to get everything sorted for him to have the most comfortable night possible! Little Wren Boy is not so little anymore. He's well over six foot tall and I know I'm very lucky to have got our youngest kid, at twenty years old, to be the first to have had a night in the hospital.  I've already been to see the ward Sister on several occasions. I'm trying not to ruffle too many feathers but..... ...

Wandering Oxford - City of Dreaming Spires

When Daughter No 2 left to see the big wide world in 2015 she was replaced on the soccer team by a  Canadian International football player.  Naturally we, Mum's Youth Hostel is always open, offered to host this star player. Ms Canada  moved into my daughter's room; took her place in the squad,  replaced her as U16's coach and became a wonderful member of our family.  Miss Canada has long gone back home, but happily  we met for a day in Oxford  whilst she was en-route to the Euro2016 Football tournament. Here are some of the photos from our day and because others have asked me for my Oxford sightseeing tips, I have given the details. Exam time! All Oxford University students must wear gowns to sit their exams. We met at Gloucester Green Bus Station, Oxford.  It is a ninety minute trip from London on the XC90 coach.  From here it's an easy stroll down Broad Street, passing the Tourist Information Centre to pick...

A rainy day in Bangkok!

DH: "So how was your day?" Me: "Eventful" DH: "Why, what happened?" Me to Mr I've been in a meeting all day:  " I nearly drowned" DH:"Don't  exaggerate..." So it appears that not only did the Bangkok rain today go largely unnoticed by those in meetings... but it was totally unexpected! Within minutes the roads turned into rivers... Apparently the rainy season doesn't start until May! The flash floods came out of nowhere ruining shoes and lunch plans... Dare I mention Global Warming? It didn't take long for cars and lorries to grind to a halt.  I did admire both the Thai inability to let a little bit of rain stop their travel plans  and secondly the way they willingly helped each other out  thigh deep in grotty water! After an extended lunch break it seemed I either made a dash for it ie run no-where very fast or bunker down to stay for breakfast......

The office Christmas parties...

We have attended office Christmas parties in  Sydney,  Melbourne and Auckland this year. Auckland shopping Each location was vying to see who could impress most  to have  the most fun  on a limited budget. It was great to see how different each event was. Auckland Symphony Orchestra carols at the Town Hall Sydney got off to an um rather spectacular start  with the naked man on the balcony followed by a Brazilian BBQ at Darling Harbour. I'm not quite sure that combination of words sounds right either... But that's where we went and what we ate!! Roadside sculpture Auckland Melbourne's party was a band in a garage all hip and trendy.  It was fantastic, although rather too much  like corporate speed dating for me. I had 60 seconds in between very loud music  to talk to people  I'd never met before before the next song drowned out all hope of conversation. Albert Park, Auckland ...

The Costume Collection

Now did you ever imagine when you put on your undies  this morning that in decades to come they might be being admired by four ladies from different parts of the globe? Me neither! This was exactly what I found myself doing recently when I visited the Yarra Park Costume Collection! The bloomers were from the Great Depression era c 1930 and probably made from an old sheet. What caught our attention was the delicate hand stitched flower  and some lace around the legs. There was a whole lot more knicker  than you and I would probably wear today! The undies are part of the personal introduction   given to her costume collection  by owner Loel Thompson,  ' and not very well made either' she adds. It's a clever way to grab your attention  especially as Loel contrasts the sheet knickers with a delicate  trousseau  Every piece in the collection has a story to tell. There is a story about the ...
