Brilliant Britain in the Spring

It has been a long, hard and bleak British winter which has made Spring  all the more delightful for everyone, and especially wonderful for me  arriving in the UK from the hot and humid tropics. Of course, we arrived to for a quick visit to catch up with family and friends  to find everyone apologising for the dismal, cold weather  - not at all I said, I love it cool these days! We've had a wonderful time, enjoying beautiful Britain in the Spring.  Everything seems particularly green this year. The flowers are out to delight, we just love the tulips at Dyrham House and the bluebells woods are stunning. By the May Bank holiday weekend, the weather was being reported as a 28-degree scorcher. Yeah right, it was spot on perfect for me.  I'm heading back to Bangkok this week where the temperature will be scorching no fib! I have finished off my Blogging from A to Z (2018) Challenge . Thank you to everyone who has poppe...

Balloon Love, London

‘I travel a lot, I hate having my life disrupted by routine:’   Caskie Stinnett    With a life of perpetual travel, I get to check out a fair few hotels. Isn’t it great to find somewhere a bit different and full of surprises, like  The Hoxton, Shoreditch, London?   On first entering their Hoxton Manor concept room, there was a split-second hesitation as to whether we had the right keys? Is the bed made and what’s that on the floor?  Followed by the grin, the realisation and the wow of the invitation to throw yourself onto the XXL humungous bed, with a padded headboard on three sides, pop art ‘ Live East, Die Young’  prints, and with the bed linen folded up in the middle. What fun. Mum, have you seen the high heels and handcuffs? It’s not easy to impress Gen Y with my choice of hotels,  or anything come to think of it these days. Nailed it. I was in London to help celebrate Daughter Number...

Summer lovin'

Summer loving had me a blast, oh yeah Summer loving happened so fast, Read more:   Grease - Summer Nights Lyrics | MetroLyrics   River banks in Oxford There's no doubt about it, I'm a very lucky Wren. For the last two years, I've had two summers. Mr Blathwaytes garden at Durham, near Bath in Gloucestershire Chasing summer is something we really rather like. It's in the retirement plan:  Australian summer followed by European summer! How good does that sound? Hyde Park Gardens, London This year's trip was totally unexpected,  I have a ticket booked to return to visit family and friends in the autumn. When Mr Wren's impromptu business trip coincided exactly  with a dream itinerary of Hong Kong, Paris and London   arriving in England for the summer.  Of course, I said 'can I come too?' Regents Park, London Hearing the weather is cold and miserable back home in Melbourne just adds to th...

All the Queen's horses

Today over two hundred and fifty of the Queen's horses took part in Trooping of the Colour.  It is exciting to be in London at the moment.  The country is getting ready for a  massive party.  No, not the one when England, Wales or even better Northern Ireland, make it to the finals of Euro2016 football.  No, the one for  Our Maj, she's turning 90 you know! Last weekend we got up early to have a jog round Hyde Park. Well, on account of my dodgy knee, I was planning on a walk, to take a few photos, and to head straight for the Serpentine cafe to meet Mr Wren.  'Mine's a skinny cappucino'   thanks .   When out of nowhere, the Household Cavalry appeared. Such a glorious sight, horse after horse, after horse. Uniforms polished and perfected, bright and shiny. Horses with pricked ears in calm formation.  This had me trotting up the entire length of South Carriage Drive, like a spring chicken, not an old w...

I'm loving London life!

We're having a grand old time in London. Except the weather has not been very kind. 'It's fresh Ma'am'   the hotel doormen with the black bowler hats would tell me  every morning. 'Fresh!!!! It's friggin freezing'  this Aussie  would reply.  There is just something about a man in a bowler hat  that brings out the inner Cockney mongrel in me. 'Yes Ma'am!'   they would reply.  They are recruited for their politeness. They win. Yesterday Mr Wren and I found ourselves with a rare London afternoon to ourselves. We were walking along the Embankment, on our way to Westminster, to see the Prime Minister.  Somehow it felt important to go and find out what on earth was going on with this Brexit EU referendum that everyone is talking about. When the heavens opened. We were torn, one one hand we were only a hop, skip and a jump from Downing Street,  on the other hand we were getting wet, real wet. Faced with the sam...
