Elephant Prayers for the World

Hello, hello how are we all going?

I feel like in my neck of the woods we are all holding our breath about this second wave of COVID-19. Here in Thailand, things are still going well but I am looking across at friends and family in Melbourne, Florida, California, and Spain with everything crossed and sending lots of love.

This weekend we've had a holiday weekend here in Thailand, it is the King's Birthday. Long Live the King! We are very fortunate to be able to freely travel within Thailand and are venturing further and further afield. For this week's wanderings, we took a road trip.

Won’t you take a wander with me and I’ll show you around!

I’ve found my new favourite temple in Thailand. The only trouble is that we’ve had to drive over 5 hours to find it! This week's staycation has taken us to Sukhothai the first ancient capital of ancient Siam - it is worth the trip!

Let me introduce you to Wat Chang Lom, outside the city walls to the East. This temple is a large group of ancient monuments, with a main bell-shaped chedi with 32 elephant sculptures at its base.

The temple was having a festival and on hearing the becking music, we felt attracted to have a look.  Without really knowing what we were doing, we bought two candles and as the sun was setting we left them with one of the elephants.

If we thought this was magical just wait and see what happened the next day. I’m not religious but I am drawn on occasion, to some divine presence.

Let’s go back for more elephant prayers, I suggested!

Well, when we got there the whole world and his Soi dog had had that idea! The temple festival had really ramped up!

The chedi looked amazing bathed in different coloured lights and with candles twinkling the whole way up its giant bell. It would have been quite an effort scaling these heights to place these delicate candles.

Under the moonlight, we joined a parade of Thai’s carrying lights circling the chedi with contemplative, silent walks. At a certain point, they left their candles with a prayer.

It didn’t really matter to us, that we had no idea what we had joined. The Thai people are always accepting, so calm and I feel so appreciative of Farang “foreigners” who want to be part of their culture.

We weren’t quite sure whether it was appropriate to leave our candle with our elephant but I felt we had a bond! So we did a treble loop and quietly left our candles not with the group lights but with our Elly. We asked her to stay strong, and look out for us all!

Hope to see you there! Have a great week everyone.

I'm glad you left your candle with Elly. We can use all the elephant prayers we can get. This looks beautiful and fun and I'm' so glad you are not quarantined or isolating!
we are going softly softly here in Australia. In Western Australia numbers are very low, due to our hard border closures with the rest of Australia and the world, but in the eastern states, in Victoria, there is a worrying upward trend of cases at the moment. Such a scary time. We have been staying close to home, but starting to spread our travels a bit wider soon. Take care and stay safe, and thank you for visiting my blog this week.
Your posts are so interesting and your photos are superb! Thanks for sharing the elephants. Amazing creatures!

Covid is terrible here in the States. Chicago (Illinois) is steady. We need true leadership and we will know in November if that will happen.

I would have had to return to hang out with the elephants again, too. What a magical place. Is it possible to feel the energy across the world and through the Internet? I think so!
Things get worse and worse here and we venture out only to pick up food we have ordered in the pick-up area in the parking lot of the store. I’m so grateful for your blog and others like it that give me a window on the world, some vicarious travel, a little dose of hope.
Wander on, Wren!

Thanks so for sharing this uplifting post. A staycation the morphed into a simple spiritual journey.
How beautiful - both the temple and the ceremony as well. Our #2 daughter-in-love was born in Taiwan and when we last visited she took me with her to visit her temple. It was stunningly beautiful and I truly wanted to take pictures but I felt it wasn't my place to do so. She said it would have been fine but I preferred to show my respect while inside.

The lighting at night make it magical. I hope the elephants protect it's beauty always.
I enjoy learning about other cultures. There seems to be so mush spirituality - and I don't think it matters what God you follow - in the end it is all the same, and we all are praying all over the world, for the same thing right now. Stay safe, enjoy the rest of your week, and thank you for visiting my blog this week.

Autumn Spice and everything nice!

Hey, what ever happened to Summer? I hope yours was lovely, mine was pretty amazing! It feels like my whole year has whizzed past in a flash, how about yours?  I've had a year of saying "yes" to everything offered to me. It has been exciting to put it out to the Universe to see where I should be. We feel very fortunate to be able to do this in my husband's early years of retirement. I'm just back in Asia from the US. I never feel my year is quite right without seeing British daffodils in the Spring and a pumpkin and the leaves turning in Autumn. Yay, the world nailed it this year, thank you.  Read on to find out what happened when my ultimate yes occurred on a trip to Montana to meet Ruth, an IG friend. I know Bloggers will smile and not be at all concerned, we've been meeting up around the globe for years, haven't we...?!  But let's just say some of my family and friends were, you're doing what?! But first some Little Wren updates! France I had so...

Taipei Adventures, naked - moi?!

I have to tell you all about my little adventure in Taipei recently, naked at the Hot Springs! I can't believe that I have never been to Taiwan, I certainly urge you all to go if you ever get the chance. For me, I loved the combination of influences of two countries I enjoy.  Street views from Downtown Taipei The Chinese left some interesting historical influences and stunning architecture, which combined with a Japanese legacy and efficiency in transportation, makes Taipei an easy place to visit, with so much to see. Nowadays, Taiwan has emerged as a thoroughly modern city, I loved my time there. It felt exotic and safe until I had to get my kit off. It was a spur of the moment decisions to join my husband on his Taiwanese business trip, prompted by the delay in the arrival of our furniture into Bangkok, and ‘no room at the inn’ where we had been staying. Given that I’m commitment and fancy-free in Thailand; there’s no job, no kids, no dog and absolutely nothing in ...

L'eau de toilette....

Our meals at The Serai were a huge part of the enjoyment of our stay. Lunch & dinners are marathon five course events...We tried not to over-order but even when we cut back to try to pace ourselves, Chef would send out little treats for us to try... If one person expressed an interest in a particular dish, we all got it.... Whenever someone ordered something we all got it.... ...although sometimes it took a quite a few attempts... 'Can you do oats, no milk?' .... 'Can you do ginger, hot water and some lemon, no milk?' We have an eclectic group of tastes from Miss ' Extra spicy ' to Miss ' Not too spicy ' through to Miss ' Vegetarian, no dairy ' , myself as ' Miss Recovering, extra careful and just wants soup. ...and even Miss India herself who every now and again just orders chips... So we can't leave without saying a huge thank you to the Chef for the best food that we have had so far.... We hear conflicting reports about whether th...
